What is pelvic health, and what is pelvic floor therapy?
Pelvic health is a broad term that refers to the state of well-being and optimal functioning of the structures and systems within the pelvis, including the bladder, reproductive organs, and rectum. Pelvic health involves the proper functioning and coordination of these organs, as well as the surrounding muscles, ligaments, and connective tissues.
Maintaining good pelvic health is crucial for a range of bodily functions, such as urinary and bowel control, sexual function, and support for the core and lower body. Pelvic health can influence, and be influenced by various factors, including pregnancy and childbirth, aging, trauma, hormonal changes, and certain medical conditions.
Pelvic floor therapy, also known as pelvic floor rehabilitation, more specifically refers to a specialized form of therapy conducted by occupational and physical therapists that focus on assessing and treating dysfunctions in the pelvic floor muscles. The pelvic floor muscles are a group of muscles located at the bottom of the pelvis, supporting the bladder, rectum, and reproductive organs.
While the terms are often used interchangeably, we tend to refer to "pelvic health" to indicate a more all-encompassing approach in treating dysfunctions related to the bladder, bowels, and pain. Balanced Pelvic Health takes a whole-body, whole-person approach to healing and wellness.
What is Occupational Therapy?
Occupational therapy is a healthcare profession that helps individuals of all ages enhance their ability to engage in meaningful activities (or occupations) that are important to them. Occupational therapists work with people who have physical, cognitive, developmental, or emotional challenges that impact their everyday functioning. Through a client-centered and holistic approach, occupational therapists assess individuals' abilities, develop personalized intervention plans, and provide therapeutic techniques and strategies. This treatment approach promotes independence, improves physical and mental well-being, and facilitates participation in activities at home, school, work, and the community. The goal of occupational therapy is to enable individuals to lead fulfilling lives and achieve their maximum potential.
At Balanced Pelvic Health, we offer a comprehensive, collaborative, holistic, and integrative approach to your pelvic health and overall well-being. This may include education, mind-body techniques, exercise, manual therapies, and coaching on changing habits and routines to accomplish your goals. The journey is yours, we simply act as your guide.

Do I need an order from my physician?
At Balanced Pelvic Health, we take a collaborative and interdisciplinary approach to your health and well-being. While an order from a physician is not required for pelvic health occupational therapy services, it is highly advisable that you obtain one prior to an evaluation for the following reasons:
An order from a physician allows for open communication between you pelvic floor occupational therapist and the provider, and increases the resources available for follow-up on your condition.
Many insurance companies require an order for reimbursement; having one will increase the likelihood of reimbursement if you plan to submit a bill for out-of-network benefits.
